Flyers rookie Matvei Michkov discloses his feelings ahead of facing Russian great Alex Ovechkin

ARJUN B

Philadelphia Flyers' rookie sensation Matvei Michkov is set to face off against his childhood hero, the legendary Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, on Tuesday night at Philadelphia.

As the hockey world eagerly anticipates this momentous clash, Michkov shared his thoughts on the eve of the pivotal encounter.

"Everybody watched him when he was younger. I watched him when I was younger. He's one of the greatest players ever, and, for sure, one of the best," Matvei Michkov said through an interpreter on Monday.

At 39, Ovechkin still continues to chase hockey milestones as he scored his first goal of the season against the New Jersey Devils last Saturday, which marked his 854th in the NHL. He needs 40 more to match Wayne Gretkzys record, which many believe to be unbreakable.

"It's going to be unique and historical to be playing against such a player. It's an honor," Michkov said of facing Ovechkin for the first time.

Michkov is also starting to make his mark in the NHL. He has scored two goals and provided two assists, putting him on par with other top players on the Flyers in terms of points.

The 19-year-old's arrival has also improved Philadelphia's power play. The unit has scored five goals with Michkov's help after only scoring five power play goals in the first 17 games last season.

Alex Ovechkin talks about Matvei Michkov

Although Alex Ovechkin hasn't watched Michkov play yet, he has heard plenty about the talented teenager.

"I think it's exciting when skilled young players like Michkov come over to the NHL and play the right way - they really lead the charge," Ovechkin said as per NHL.com.
"As a veteran player you enjoy seeing that, and you just wish them good luck and see what happens."

Ovechkin is familiar with some of the people the Flyers organization has put around Michkov to help his transition to the league, including defenseman Egor Zamula, goalie Ivan Fedotov and longtime KHL coach Oleg Znarok.

"I know Oleg is out there, so Michkov is in good hands," Ovechkin remarked.
"He just needs to be patient, play his game, and not think too much. That's the most important thing,if you overthink it, it's not going to work out."

In conclusion, Ovechkin is excited for the young star Matvei Michkov.
