Former Team Sweden coach bluntly criticizes Erik Karlsson over defensive shortcomings ahead of 4 Nations Face-Off
Former Team Sweden coach Johan Garpenlov recently questioned Erik Karlsson’s selection for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Garpenlov, who led Sweden from 2019 to 2022, said he would not have picked Karlsson due to his defensive weaknesses.
Karlsson, a star defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is known for his offensive skills. In 2022-23, he had a standout 101-point season and won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman.
However, Garpenlov is concerned about Karlsson’s defensive abilities, noting that the tournament format requires fewer mistakes and a sharper defensive focus.
"I had not selected Erik Karlsson in this 4 Nations squad. His shortcomings in the defensive game are too great in such a short tournament. Every match is so important and then you can't afford to make these big mistakes like Erik Karlsson unfortunately does," Garpenlov said via Radiosporten.
In June, Sweden announced its first six players for the tournament, including Karlsson, Victor Hedman and Gustav Forsling on defense. Forwards Mika Zibanejad, William Nylander and Filip Forsberg were also selected.
Sam Hallam, who replaced Garpenlov as coach in 2022, will lead the team. Hallam seems confident in his choices, but Garpenlov’s views have led to debate among fans and analysts.
Karlsson’s season with Pittsburgh has been challenging. He has two goals and 10 points in 17 games, with a -7 rating — the third-worst among Penguins defensemen.
The Penguins have struggled defensively this season, with 20 of 22 skaters showing negative plus-minus ratings. Karlsson’s performance mirrors the team’s difficulties, but some argue that his offensive style makes him an easy target for critics wanting stronger defense.
Despite this, Karlsson’s recent international play for Sweden has been strong. He led Swedish defensemen with six goals at the last World Championships, helping Sweden secure a bronze medal.
Insider Josh Yohe commented on Penguins' concern with Erik Karlsson
The Pittsburgh Penguins brought in Erik Karlsson to improve both offense and defense. Karlsson has shown average offensive play, including a goal and assist against the Capitals. However, there are concerns about his defense. The Athletic's Josh Yohe says that the Penguins are concerned.
"The (Penguins) organization remains concerned about his game, his nonchalant attitude and his contract," Yohe wrote on Monday.
Karlsson's positioning has been a problem, especially against left-wing rushes. In some games, he missed defensive assignments, allowing the other team to score. This has led to a -7 rating over 17 games.
Karlsson’s coach, Mike Sullivan, previously called for more discipline and effort from him. His $92 million contract adds pressure on the Penguins.
With the contract running until 2026-27, the team needs him to be better on both ends of the ice. The Penguins are limited in how they can improve their defense, so Karlsson’s play is important for their success.
