GM Barry Trotz says Yaroslav Askarov's public trade demand put Predators 'at a disadvantage'
Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz opened up about the trade of top goaltending prospect Yaroslav Askarov to the San Jose Sharks. The move came after public trade demand from Askarov's camp, which put the Predators in a challenging position according to Trotz.
The trade sent Askarov, a 2025 third-round pick and forward Nolan Burke to San Jose in exchange for center David Edstrom, a 2025 first-round pick and goalie Magnus Chrona.
Speaking on the TSN OverDrive podcast, Trotz acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with a top prospect.
"Well, you never want to lose a top prospect, but I think we got some in return, in David Edstrom who we you look at our franchise we're looking for center iceman," Trotz said.
"I understood fully the young guys don't have the patience. I think that they used to have back in a day, and I totally understand that."
Trotz went on to explain that he had assured Askarov that he would get him enough games this season and brought back renowned goaltending coach Mitch Korn to aid in Askarov's development.
The veteran coach also said he had no issues with Askarov serving as the backup this season in Nashville and wanted to ensure that he got enough games and support. But he understood Yaroslav Askarov's perspective and that the situation didn't play out as hoped.
Trotz acknowledged the disadvantage the public trade demand put the Predators in.
"When it's public I think that the team is always in a you know they, smart General Managers, you're not going to, you know they're not going to give you, you know, full price, sometimes if you will because you're working from a little bit at a disadvantage.” he added.
Barry Trotz believes they received fair value in the trade and is optimistic about the future.
