Habs HC Martin St-Louis doesn't mince words as he assesses Montreal Canadiens' 7-2 thumping by NY Rangers
The Montreal Canadiens were thoroughly outplayed by the New York Rangers on Tuesday night, falling 7-2 on home ice. The lopsided loss had Habs coach Martin St-Louis questioning his team's effort and execution.
"I'm very disappointed in the result but I'm probably going to go home, probably going to watch the game and I'll have a plan tomorrow cause there's nothing we can do tonight about tonight - that game is over, now it's what's next that's important to me..." St. Louis said after the game.
Promptly within the first minute of play, Mika Zibanejad put New York on the scoreboard to kick off the scoring for his team. Jonny Brodzinski, Reilly Smith and Filip Chytil added goals later in the frame.
"It’s hard to win a game when you give up a field goal before the first tv timeout,” Martin St-Louis lamented about the early deficit.
Nick Suzuki scored in both the first and second period for the Canadiens to cut down the lead to 4-2. However, the Rangers answered back with three more goals. Braden Schneider scored in the same period. Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko scored in the third period to make it 7-2 final score.
Igor Shesterkin stopped 21 shots. Cayden Primeau replaced Montembeault in the Montreal goal after the first period and stopped 32 shots
Habs HC Martin St-Louis on team's rebuild
The Montreal Canadiens are currently undergoing a rebuilding phase as acknowledged by head coach Martin St-Louis in the aftermath of the defeat against the New York Rangers. St Louis openly said the team has ground to cover to achieve their desired performance level.
"Tonight is one of those nights that we got humbled a little bit about what we're actually trying to look like," St-Louis said. "We might not be there yet but we're going to work our way to get to that & hopefully we get to a point we're humbling teams."
Martin St-Louis is focused on the big picture despite tough losses like this one. The coach sees the upcoming practices as an opportunity to repair and improve.
"I look at the next 3 days to repair collectively and individually - we don't play until Saturday so I hope on Saturday we're a better version of ourselves..." he said.
The Canadiens next face the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
