HC Jim Montgomery makes his feeling about Boston Bruins' star players' piling offensive struggles extremely clear
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Tuesday night. This win was their first in Boston since April 5, 2021. Samuel Ersson played a key role, stopping 23 shots for his first shutout of the season. Tyson Foerster scored first, breaking the tie early in the second period. Joel Farabee added an empty-net goal with 24 seconds left.
After the game, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery shared his frustration about the team’s offense. He addressed concerns about star players not performing. When a reporter asked if the team was overthinking, Montgomery said they lacked execution.
"We're just not making plays and not doing enough to generate high-danger scoring chances. Whether that's a will to go to those areas or just not the right game plan, we're all culpable for not coming out with a victory tonight," Montgomery said.
Montgomery stressed that the star players need to step up.
"Well, on every team, your best players—your star players—have to carry the weight, the load offensively. Those are the players out on the power play, and right now, offense isn’t materializing for us," Montgomery added.
The Boston Bruins' offense has not produced results so far. They will face the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, hoping to improve. Meanwhile, the Flyers will return home to play the St. Louis Blues after their recent win.
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand talks about missed opportunities
The Bruins lost to the Flyers at TD Garden. The Flyers are leading the season series 1-0. Flyers had 23 shots on goal and Bruins had 19. Flyers won 58.8% of face-offs but both teams went scoreless on power plays, with the Flyers going 0/2 and Bruins 0/4.
Brad Marchand nearly scored in the third period, but Ersson blocked the attempt. Marchand said Boston needs to keep building on positives.
“You have to respect every team every night,” Marchand said per NHL.com. “We had opportunities tonight, especially the first two periods. After the second, it easily could have been a tie game, but we let it get away from us a little bit, and again, just have to continue to build on the right things.”
Flyers had 10 penalty minutes and 28 hits, Bruins had 6 penalty minutes and 23 hits. Flyers blocked 28 shots, while Bruins blocked 11. Flyers had 14 giveaways, and Bruins had 15.
Bruins goalie Joonas Korpisalo, in his first start since Oct. 16, made 17 saves.
“It’s been a while since I played last time, so I just tried to go out there and enjoy the game,” said Korpisalo, starting for the first time since October 16. “Just put everything I got [out] there.”
The Boston Bruins will get a rematch on November 2 at 1:00 PM EDT.
