HC Patrick Roy makes his feelings extremely clear about Islanders D-man's 2-minute minor penalty for delaying game in 5-3 loss

New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy expressed frustration after the 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. A key moment came in the second period when Alexander Romanov’s penalty for delaying the game led to a five-on-three advantage.

The Blackhawks capitalized, with Teuvo Teravainen scoring to make it 3-2 instead of the Islanders taking the lead.

"It's s a 2-2 game. We throw a puck in the stands and give them a five-on-three. There’s a mistake that you’re allowed to make, but there’s some that you cannot, and it will cost you at some point, and they took a 3-2 lead, instead of us going 3-2," Roy rued.
"The second half of the third period, it was a 3-3 game. It could go either side, but I thought we had our chances. It was what 33-20 some shots on the net. So we did a lot of good things out there, but we need to find ways to win hockey game; that’s all," he added.

Defensive mistakes hurt the Islanders throughout the game. Ilya Mikheyev’s opening goal came from poor coverage behind the net. Taylor Hall scored in the final minute of the first period when the Isles failed to clear the puck, leaving him open. In the third, Connor Bedard scored the game-winner after the Islanders couldn’t guard the net.

Isles forward Mathew Barzal returned to the lineup after being sidelined for 21 games due to an upper-body injury. He admitted that the team’s defensive issues cost them the game.

“I thought we probably deserved a little better,” Barza said, per NHL.com, “I thought we played all right. A few breakdowns defensively cost us.”

The Isles must focus on reducing errors to secure wins moving forward.
