HC Rick Tocchet sets expectations for $92.8M Vancouver Canucks forward post disappointing playoff run
Rick Tocchet is raising expectations for the Vancouver Canucks this season. He's focusing on Elias Pettersson, who signed an eight-year, $92.8 million extension in March.
Despite last season’s successes, Tocchet wants more. He believes the challenges will be tougher this year. Tocchet’s message to the team is clear:
“Embrace the hard. Embrace hard, I don’t know. Hard is good? Whatever it is ... like, I don't believe in 'Hey, you work hard today, it'll be easier tomorrow.' It's always going to be hard. That's just the way it is, so why not condition your mind?
"I talked to the players after a game in the playoffs. You know, you're limping, you've got an ice pack (after winning). That's the best feeling in the world. But it's not going to get easier tomorrow. It's going to be even harder. That's the way I look at this season,” Rick Tocchet said, via Sportsnet.com.
Tocchet wants players to prepare for a demanding season. Last year, the Vancouver Canucks had 50 wins and a deep playoff run. Tocchet sees that as just the start and expects the team to build on that and perform even better.
Pettersson, one of the league’s top players, will be crucial. He had a solid regular season, but his playoff performances were less impressive. Tocchet is counting on Pettersson to lead the Vancouver Canucks.
Tocchet’s expectations go beyond Pettersson, though. He wants improvements in scoring and special teams. He plans to fix last season’s mistakes and set higher standards. For the Vancouver Canucks, this season is about surpassing past achievements and facing new challenges.
Vancouver Canucks forward on summer training success
Elias Pettersson is back in North America, ready to show what he has learned from his summer training. At the Young Stars Classic, he’s working on improving his game.
“This is what all of us have been waiting on to play games and it was just so fun to play again and I’m really excited for the upcoming games,” Pettersson said (via NHL.com).
His first game was a success, with a 2-0 win over Edmonton. Pettersson and Kirill Kudryavtsev played well together and handled the game effectively.
On their off days, Pettersson and Co. stay busy with practice and gym workouts. Pettersson has focused on increasing his speed and quickness.
“It was really good. I was working really much with my speed and ability to get from point A to point B as quick as I can and just trying to keep building my strength as well,” Pettersson added.
Elias Pettersson's summer work has prepared him well for the challenges ahead.
