HC Scott Arniel gets defensive when asked about Winnipeg Jets' top line's lack of production

The Winnipeg Jets faced their first loss of the season, a 6-4 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, ending their impressive eight-game winning streak.

Coach Scott Arniel sounded defensive when questioned about the lack of production from the team's top line. When asked about the Connor-Sceifele-Vilardi trio and their need to start winning their minutes, he responded with a defensive tone.

"I'm not going to start explaining what line does what against the opposition because I can go back to the 8 games before, and I still think there's a lot of good hockey that's been played by those three guys."

Arniel pointed out that no player performed well during the first two periods of the Maple Leafs game, acknowledging that Toronto came in and played harder.

"There wasn't anybody that was good tonight for two periods. Toronto came out and took the game from us. They came in here, and they played a lot harder and won a lot more battles than we did.
"Whether it was our ready to go, ready to compete, ready to get into it, I don't have an answer for you. Toronto was a heck of a lot better than we were. They wanted it. They came in here and gave us a punch right in the nose."

Arniel also expressed frustration over the Winnipeg Jets' inability to capitalize on their momentum against the Maple Leafs. He noted that in the first two periods, the Jets essentially undermined their efforts.

"There was a mistake or a turnover or bad coverage and all of a sudden Toronto's getting great chances. The first two periods ... We kind of shot ourselves in the foot."
