NHL Hall of Famer - Murray Costello

Hockey Hall of Famer Murray Costello passes away at 90

Hockey Hall of Famer Murray Costello has died at age 90. The former president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Hockey Canada died Saturday in the presence of his family. Costello, born in South Porcupine, Ontario, was well known for his contributions to hockey and the number of people he impacted through his journey in the sport.

In a press release, Hockey Canada stated its feelings regarding the death of one of its greats.

"Hockey Canada sends our condolences to Murray’s family and friends, and everyone he positively impacted throughout his life and tremendous career in hockey. His legacy will continue to benefit hockey in Canada and internationally for generations to come," the association stated.

Costello had an illustrious playing career across 20 seasons during which he represented the likes of the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and many amateur teams before and after his NHL stint.

Costello's work off the ice proved to be just as vital as he saw himself at the helm of CAHA and Hockey Canada, and his tenure at the two organizations led to the development of young Canadian players.

Murray Costello's stellar contribution in overseeing the formation of the Canada Women's National Team helped women's hockey grow, also having a trickle effect of it entering the 1998 Winter Olympics. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2005.

Murray Costello and his stint as an IIHF Member

Murray Costello was a member of the IIHF for 14 years from 1998 till 2012 and helped increase hockey's reach. His passion drove the establishment of the first IIHF Women's World Championship in 1990. He also led the merger of the CAHA and Hockey Canada and left the organization to join the IIHF in 1998.

Costello resigned from the post of IIHF Council vice president in 2012 and later shared his thoughts on the decision.

"The IIHF is very much a European organization. I don’t think they would give it [the presidency] to a North American or Russian. It would give Canada too much power," Costello said.

Murray Costello and his contribution to the sport of hockey will live on for generations to come.
