Host Matt Friend teases Connor McDavid, Gary Bettman mimicry at 2024 NHL Awards show in Las Vegas

Stand-up comedian and impressionist Matt Friend is set to take the stage as the host of the 2024 NHL Awards at Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Thursday. Friend is known for his comedic talents.

The 25-year-old stand-up comedian has been making waves in the entertainment industry, having recently showcased his skills at prestigious events like the "White House Correspondents Dinner" and headlining the "Netflix Is A Joke Festival."

In an exclusive interview with NHL.com, Matt Friend shared insights into what attendees at the 2024 NHL Awards can expect from the event. Friend hinted at the mimicry of notable figures like Connor McDavid and Gary Bettman.

"I'm excited to do some topical impressions and, you know, satire as well. Sports, pop culture [we’re] going to just bring a lot of energy to Vegas. I can't wait," he said. “You're going to tune in to find out. One hundred percent it's coming out. You're going to see maybe a [Connor] McDavid, maybe a Gary Bettman. You're going to see some stuff.”

Matt Friend shares his favorite team ahead of headlining 2024 NHL Awards

Matt Friend opened up about his favorite hockey team, the Chicago Blackhawks, ahead of taking the reins as the host of the 2024 NHL Awards. Hailing from Chicago, the stand-up comedian shared nostalgic memories of his fan journey, especially during the Blackhawks' victorious area.

At that time, Friend was in middle and high school.

“I grew up a big Blackhawks fan and I'm from Chicago, so I was in middle school and then high school when they started winning, he said.

Friend vividly recalled a standout moment when the Blackhawks netted two goals against the Bruins in just 17 seconds during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

"And I have a vivid memory of watching the Blackhawks [score on] the Bruins twice in 17 seconds. My cousin was devastated. He's from Boston. It was one of the best moments ever. I was at the Cup Final when they won the third time. I was at that final game at United Center.”

Friend also expressed his enthusiasm for Connor Bedard. He mentioned that it puts his own career into perspective, as he's hosting an award show at 25 years old, while Bedard, at just 18 years old, is making waves as the rookie of the year and excelling in hockey.

“I'm excited to be hosting an award show at 25 years old but this kid’s rookie of the year. This kid’s 18 years old and absolutely destroying this sport. ”

To watch the 2024 NHL Awards live on TV, fans in the US can tune into ESPN, while the Canadian audience can view it live on Sportsnet. Moreover, the event will also be streamed live on Fubo on Thursday, June 27, at 7 p.m. ET.
