How many NHL players participated in American Century Championship celebrity golf tourney?
The NHL had a healthy representation at the American Century Championship golf tournament this year. In total, four NHLers took part in the event: Joe Pavelski, T.J. Oshie, John Carlson and Stanley Cup champion Matthew Tkachuk.
Pavelski, in particular, stands out among the NHL squad, placing second after three rounds. The fourth round will be played on Sunday. The winner takes home a $125,000 prize plus bragging rights. The winner will donate the cash prize to a charity of their choice.
Hall of Famers Mike Modano and Jeremy Roenick are the only hockey players to win the tournament. Modano won the event in 1998, while Roenick took home the honors in 2000 and 2002. Pavelski has a chance to become the third hockey player to capture the American Century Championship.
Moreover, Roenick was the runner-up in 1993, with former goaltender Grant Fuhr finishing behind Roenick in 2000.
Former tennis star Mardy Fish leads this year’s field with a score of 57 after three rounds, while Pavelski is within striking distance at 50. Meanwhile, the remaining NHLers have fallen off the pace, with John Carlson tied for 32nd, Matthew Tkachuk 40th and T.J. Oshie 49th.
Golf is Pavelski’s passion away from the NHL
Joe Pavelski is a surprisingly good golfer, but most fans wouldn’t know that, given his success on the ice. He has made a name for himself as an excellent hockey player, leading the San Jose Sharks during several successful seasons.
However, hockey was not Pavelski’s only passion growing up, as he had taken up golf at a very young age. In a 2010 interview, he revealed that he had taken up golf around the ninth grade in his native Wisconsin.
Fast forward several years, Pavelski still enjoys shooting a few rounds back in Wisconsin. When asked about why he enjoys golf so much, Pavelski told Aces Golf:
“You can go out and play a round after your workout and enjoy the time.”
He also mentioned Jeremy Roenick as a usual golfing partner:
“JR and I used to play straight up and it would come down to the last couple of holes.”
Pavelski talked about former Sharks teammate Jumbo Joe Thornton as a frequent golf buddy.
As Joe Pavelski enters the twilight of his career, he may just be entering the prime of his golf game. Perhaps he could transition to life after hockey by taking up golf as his main sport.
If Pavelski wins this year’s American Century Championship, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of the NHL’s most respected and admired players.
