"I'm so proud of him": Darnell Nurse's cousin and PWHL star Sarah showers support for heavily criticized Oilers D-man
Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse scored their fifth goal of the night in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. His cousin and PWHL Toronto star Sarah Nurse was in attendance during the game and cheered passionately for Darnell and the Oilers.
Darnell Nurse has faced heavy criticism throughout the playoffs this season. Over the last 15 games, he had managed only two assists and a -12 rating. Even coach Kris Knoblauch had acknowledged Nurse needed to improve and fans heavily criticized his playoff display.
Despite receiving a two-minute minor for tripping Sam Bennett early in Game 4, Darnell Nurse scored a fantastic snapshot at 4:59 of the second period. Sarah cheered on Darnell passionately from the other side of the glass after her cousin netted the fifth goal for his team.
While talking to Sportsnet’s rinkside host Kyle Bukauskas, the PWHL star opened up about her experience watching the Stanley Cup Final from the other side of the glass. She said:
“Oh my god, it's unbelievable. I don't realize how close we are. We're on the other side of the glass, but I'm living right now.”
Bukauskas then asked her about her reaction to Darnell Nurse's goal. She mentioned being thrilled and proud when Darnell scored and praised the incredible atmosphere.
“Oh my god, I was unbelievably hyped. I'm so proud of him. I love this atmosphere and I can't wait to see if he continues on. Hopefully we’ll win the Stanley Cup,” Sarah Nurse added.
Darnell Nurse opens up on Oilers’ "offensive outburst"
During the second intermission, Darnell Nurse spoke with Kyle Bukauskas about his team’s offensive performance. When asked what had led to their offensive outburst in the second period, Nurse attributed the success to sticking to their game plan.
“Well, I think just sticking to our game plan and getting the puck tonight,” Nurse said. “I think, you know, in the first period we, you know, we just wanted to get up there and create a little chaos in front of that. And good things happened, so we've got to continue to do that throughout this series.”
When asked about his emotions after scoring in the second period, Nurse mentioned the high energy and “fire” in the building. He said:
“Yeah, there's a lot of emotion in the building and a lot of fire in the building, so it was nice to get one. Because it’s been a while.”
The Oilers secured a massive 8-1 victory on the night, avoiding a sweep and bringing the series to 3-1. The series now moves to Florida for Game 5.
