Alex Ovechkin played alongside his son in the Ovi Cup
Alex Ovechkin participated in a friendly game in Russia as part of his "Ovi Cup" tournament on Aug. 10 alongside his son Sergei. The "Ovi Cup" is an annual youth tournament in Moscow, and Ovechkin plans to open the Alexander Ovechkin Academy in 2026 to help young players reach the KHL or NHL.
NHL stars like Evgeni Malkin and Kirill Kaprizov were also part of the event. They faced off against Ilya Kovalchuk and a team of KHL players. The game ended 6-6. The standout moment was Sergei, wearing his father's number eight, scoring a goal on a breakaway.
Ovechkin disclosed that Sergei practices six times a week and has shown improvement this year.
“Sergei loves hockey, he just adores it." Ovechkin said (via sports.ru)" Ilya has just started playing hockey. We’ll see what happens."
At 38, Ovechkin is entering his 20th NHL season and is just 42 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record. He will return to Washington, D.C., for the Capitals' training camp in September.
