Campbell's NHL journey has had ups and downs since his 2022 contract with the Oilers. After signing a five-year deal with the Oilers in the summer of 2022, Campbell has faced turbulent times. Expected to become Edmonton's new starting goalie and elevate them as Stanley Cup contenders, he has struggled to maintain his role. At the start of the 2023-24 season, he was demoted to the AHL by the Oilers.
On July 1, Campbell left the Oilers' AHL team Bakersfield Condors and joined the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year contract.
He signed a new contract with Detroit, a one-year deal worth $775,000, giving him a chance to restart and reclaim his form in the NHL. Campbell may start in the AHL this season but aims for an NHL comeback with Detroit.
