Connor McDavid breaks Wayne Gretzky's assist record
The captain of Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid, respects Wayne Gretzky's statue at Rogers Place. McDavid broke Gretzky's record for most assists in a postseason. It happened during a critical playoff game against the Florida Panthers. The series is now 3-1, and the Oilers need to win three straight games to win the Stanley Cup.
“It’s not lost on me what he means to the game,” McDavid said (via NHL.com) “But it’s not the focus right now.”
McDavid focuses on the team's goals rather than personal achievements. He played exceptionally well, scoring and assisting in a key win.
“It’s just one win, that’s all it is,” McDavid said. “It doesn't matter if you score eight or you score one, it's just one win. We've got to go to Florida, do a job and drag them back to Alberta."
McDavid showed toughness by standing up for teammate Zach Hyman. Panthers players Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk were fighting Hyman when McDavid jumped in to help Hyman.
“That’s not the game I want to play,” McDavid said. “I was just there to make sure no one was outnumbered and I thought Zach was getting doubled up. I was just trying to jump in there and do my part as a teammate."
The Oilers head to Florida for Game 5 on June 18, 2024, at 8 PM ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, MSG, and BSSO. For US viewers, it can be streamed live on ESPN+, Hulu, and TNT.
