Jeremy Swayman Contract Rumors: Top NHL insider reveals $5.6 million difference in proposed deal from Bruins
The ongoing contract negotiation between Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins has continued to be a major talking point in the NHL community as we approach the start of the 2024-25 regular season. Earlier in the week, Bruins President Cam Neely hinted that the franchise offered the 2023 William M. Jennings Trophy winner a $64 million contract.
According to Swayman's agent, Lewis Gross, who released a statement shortly after Neely's comments went viral, the team never made such an offer. On Tuesday's episode of "Morning Cuppa Hockey," NHL insider Frank Seravalli shed light on the ongoing contract negotiations between Swayman and Boston.
As he explained, the two sides are still a ways off when it comes to a potential contract. Although Neely hinted that the team offered Swayman a $64 million offer, Seravalli's sources have indicated that the team actually offered him a contract worth $62.4 million.
"I think the Swayman camp has been asking for eight [years] x $8.5 million, which is $68 million, and the Bruins were somewhere close to $6.5 [million]. So, the Bruins have gone from $6.5 [million] to $7.8 [million], they feel like they’ve moved a lot…
"They probably think, 'Hey, we’ve moved a ton, now it’s your turn,' and the fact that hasn’t happened apparently has them frustrated."
"This was not fair to Jeremy," - Jeremy Swayman's agent releases statement amid uncertainty heading into 2024-25 season for the Boston Bruins
This offseason, the Boston Bruins notably parted ways with 2023 Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark, dealing him to the Ottawa Senators. At the time, there was some concern expressed by fans given that the team hadn't signed Jeremy Swayman to a new contract.
Now, with the 2024-25 season right around the corner, the Bruins are exactly one week away from opening night, and Jeremy Swayman still hasn't put pen to paper on a new contract. Given that, it's no surprise the franchise is starting to feel the pressure.
While Joonas Korpisalo, who is expected to start the season in net for Boston, has proven to be a talented netminder, the absence of a true starter like Swayman is becoming more problematic by the day.
Following Neely's comments on Monday, Jeremy Swayman's agent released a statement, indicating that the 2024 All-Star would take a few days to figure out his next step. The statement, released on X (formerly known as Twitter), read, in part:
"At today's press conference, $64 million was referenced. This was the first time that number was discussed in our negotiations. Prior to the press conference, no offer was made reaching that level.
"We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy. We will take a few days to discuss where we go from here."
With the Bruins' season set to start on Oct. 8, time is running out for the franchise to finalize a new contract before opening night.
