Jeremy Swayman runs risk of forfeiting approx. '$40,000 a day' lest he signs Bruins extension, warns insider Chris Johnston
Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman is still without a new contract. According to insider Chris Johnston, Swayman risks losing about $40,000 per day if he doesn’t sign by the start of the season.
During October 2nd's TSN broadcast, Hockey Insiders Chris Johnston, Gino Reida and Darren Dreger talked about the situation between the Bruins and their RFA netminder, Jeremy Swayman.
[0:27] "Well, I'll put it this way, as dramatically as it played out Monday, as publicly as it played out, there's still a week here for Jeremy swayman and the Boston Bruins to repair things, to get back to the bargaining table before either them lose something tangible. "Johnston said, "And I think that fact alone guarantees that after a little bit of a cooling off period, they're going to take another run at this."
Swayman is a restricted free agent (RFA) and is expected to be the Bruins’ main goalie after Linus Ullmark was traded. Reports say the Bruins offered Swayman an eight-year contract, but his camp is asking for around $9.5 million per year.
[0:46] "Consider this, if Jeremy swayman isn't signed by opening night, every night of the season that passes by, he is forfeiting salary, something like $40,000 a day if he's not uniform for the Bruins." Johnston said, "If the Bruins don't sign him by opening night, they will have a more difficult time fitting them under their cap structure when they eventually do."
Johnston mentioned that Swayman is unhappy about his summer arbitration hearing and Cam Neely's approach to contract talks. He mentioned that there is a genuine $64 million offer and both sides have a week to negotiate a deal.
Negotiations have been tense, partly because of past arbitration issues. Boston Bruins president Cam Neely said Swayman had "64 million reasons" to sign. Swayman’s agent, Lewis Gross, is disappointed by these comments and said that no such offer was made by the team's front office.
Insider Darren Dreger said Bruins are committed to Jeremy Swayman's extension
Insider Darren Dreger said the Boston Bruins want to sign their top goaltender, Jeremy Swayman, soon. The NHL season is about to start and they hope to resolve the contract talks amicably. Swayman is a restricted free agent, so trades are unlikely. The Bruins are still committed to finalizing a contract extension for him.
[2:06] "Look, we need to remind everybody out there that he is a restricted free agent." Dreger said, "The Boston Bruins own his rights, so none of that is happening anytime soon. They're still committed to getting an extension work done."
The Bruins are hopeful they will reach a deal with Swayman before the December 1 deadline.
