John Tortorella makes his feelings known after Philadelphia Flyers squander 3-0 lead in SO loss to Golden Knights
The Philadelphia Flyers suffered a tough 5-4 shootout loss against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night after blowing a 3-0 lead. The loss reduced Philadelhphia's record to 9-10-3 on the season.
Flyers head coach John Tortorella shared his thoughts on how the team handled the situation postgame:
“I don't think we buckled. I think we found ourselves and stayed within ourselves and played,” Tortorella said.
(from 1:40 mark onwards)
Philadelphia scored two goals in the opening period by Morgan Frost and Sean Couturier. In the second period, Emil Andrae extended the lead to 3-0. However, the Golden Knights scored two goals in the second period by Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev to reduce the lead to 3-2.
Matvei Michkov then made it 4-2 for the Flyers before Pavel Dorofeyev's power play goal brought Vegas one goal closer at 4-3.
Tanner Pearson then tied the game in the third period for Vegas before Jack Eichel scored in the shootout to give the Golden Knights a comeback 5-4 victory.
"I look at the fourth goal, and they tie it, they come all the way back, right? I think we're playing a pretty good third period," Tortorella said. "They tie it, and then we take over the game. I thought we played really well when we could have lost ourselves a little bit."
He went on to praise his team for not giving up when the game was tied late, noting that the Flyers played their best hockey after Vegas erased their three-goal deficit.
John Tortorella on what went wrong in Philadelphia Flyers' 5-4 shootout loss against Golden Knights
John Tortorella acknowledged that there was a rough stretch of about seven or eight minutes in the second period where turnovers along the boards hurt them.
"Yeah, you take out seven or eight minutes of that second period where some turnovers are on the wall. Other than that, I thought we played really good hockey," Tortorella said. "One of our better showings in the offensive zone, as far as puck movement, people moving without it.”
He praised his team's overall effort and said that if not for those costly turnovers in the second period, it could have been a really good game. Tortorella further noted they allowed the Golden Knights to capitalize on their mistakes.
The Philadelphia Flyers face the Nashville Predators next at Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday.
