Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith shares a message for Cole Caufield after changing jersey number to honor late NHL star
After Johnny Gaudreau was killed in a biking accident, Montreal Canadiens star Cole Caufield said he was going to wear the No. 13 in honor of the late hockey star. After his touching gesture, Gaudreau's late wife, Meredith, shared a message and a picture for the star hockey player.
"John would be so honored. Cole wore my Gaudreau jacket home from a night out in Ostrava together during Worlds. 13," she wrote in her story.
Gaudreau confirmed that the two hockey players had a good relationship and she firmly believes that her late husband would be so proud that Caufield decided to change his uniform number from 22 to 13.
“I wore #13 at a point in my career because of Johnny and now I will be wearing it again to honor him. He paved the way for smaller players and proved we had a future in this game at the highest level. I will forever be grateful to him for inspiring me and others,” Caufield said on September 3 via CBC.
The jersey change will take effect this season, which begins in October. It's unclear what Gaudreau's two teams will do about the number he wore.
