Jonathan Quick makes his feelings known about stepping in for injured $92,000,000 NY Rangers goalie
Jonathan Quick is set to step in for injured New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin was hurt after a hit from Ryan Lindgren and a crash from Sam Bennett during a game against Florida. Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year, $92 million contract in December, will miss at least seven days.
Quick is confident that Shesterkin's absence will not impact the team.
“It doesn’t change the game plan, right? No matter who is in the lineup, who is out of the lineup, we do everything we can to prepare for the game [Thursday] night,” Quick said. “Go to work.”
Quick is in the midst of a one-year contract with the Rangers worth $1.275 million. He has struggled in recent games. After starting the season 4-0 with two shutouts, he has a 4.00 goals-against average and a .855 save percentage in his last five games.
However, he insisted that his approach was simple.
"You never want to overcomplicate anything," he said. "It’s an 82-game season. It’s a season where, no matter what the situation is..., you go one game at a time," he said.
The Rangers are in a tough spot. They have lost 15 of their last 19 games and are seven points off a playoff spot.
Head coach Peter Laviolette called on his players to step up ahead of a crucial run of games:
"It's gotta be better. I'm not sitting here saying it's okay. Nothing's okay right now. The starts, discipline, specialty teams, 5-on-5 [have to be on point]. We need to put the throttle down and realize these points have got to start coming our way now."
Rangers camp will expect Jonathan Quick's effort to prevent another five-game losing streak
The New York Rangers are having a tough 2024-25 season with a 16-19-1 record. Artemi Panarin leads the team with 39 points, and Adam Fox has 27 assists. The team averages 2.81 goals per game but allows 3.14, showing defensive struggles. Their power play is weak at 18%, but the penalty kill is strong at 84.7%.
The Rangers are on the verge of another five-game losing streak heading into a game against the Boston Bruins. Scoring depth is lacking with Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin underperforming in the last eight games for a combined five points. The Rangers defense remains a concern with Jacob Trouba traded.
