NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Dallas Stars at Edmonton Oilers

Kris Knoblauch praises Evan Bouchard's underrated defensive efforts during playoffs

ARJUN B

Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch spoke highly of Evan Bouchard's performance on both ends of the ice during the team's playoff campaign.

Bouchard's remarkable 27 points in 18 playoff matches this season have secured him the third spot in Oilers franchise history for playoff points by a defenseman.

"He's really taken off especially this year," Knoblauch said on Friday press conference, crediting the guidance of senior advisor Paul Coffey and pairing with Mattias Ekholm. "Being partnered with Ekholm, Ekholm is a great complement player for him."

Knoblauch went on to commend Bouchard's clutch scoring, including his overtime winner against Vancouver.

"You know on the power play, he gets a lot of recognition about his big shot, but he is able to see the ice well and make plays," he remarked.

While known for his offensive prowess, Knoblauch was quick to point out Bouchard's defensive strengths.

"Obviously, he gets a lot of recognition for the offensive play, but he probably doesn't get enough recognition for defensive play too," he stated.

Knoblauch explained that Bouchard's hockey IQ makes him an excellent defender.

"When he does have to defend, he is so smart, he is usually a step ahead of everyone, can read plays and break them up," he elaborated. "So, we're happy with the way obviously he's playing.

Evan Bouchard shares his thoughts on playoff performance

Evan Bouchard is the third-fastest at his position in NHL history to reach 50 career playoff points (45 games), only behind Brian Leetch (41 games) and Bobby Orr (39 games).

This impressive stat certainly caught Evan Bouchard's attention. As he put it,

"It’s cool to hear you being talked about in the same conversations with some of the all-time greats." Said to NHL.com on Friday.

However, Bouchard was quick to point out that the team's success comes first, saying:

"There is another round to be won. Period. So the bigger picture here is that there is another round to go and that’s the focus."

After the playoffs are over, Bouchard noted he would reflect more on his personal accomplishments. For now, though, his mind is set on helping his team advance.

Bouchard also highlighted the crucial role played by his skilled teammates, such as Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, for his playoff success.

"When you’re on a power play, for example, with the likes of Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, guys like that, you’re set up to succeed. You have to take advantage of the opportunity." Evan Bouchard said.

Bouchard remains focused on the Stanley Cup Final as Game 1 against the Florida Panthers is set for Saturday in Florida.
