"Loved every minute": Dylan Holloway bids farewell to Oilers, looks forward to new chapter with St. Louis Blues
Dylan Holloway is moving on from the Edmonton Oilers, as he looks forward to joining the St. Louis Blues. On August 13, 2024, the Blues announced they had made offer sheets to Holloway and Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg.
The Oilers had seven days to decide if they wanted to match the offers. They chose not to and later, both players were traded to the Blues.
Holloway shared a farewell message on Instagram with a photo of him in an Edmonton jersey. He thanked the Oilers, his teammates and the fans for making his time in Edmonton special. He also expressed excitement about starting with the Blues, saying:
"Thank you to the @edmontonoilers organization, my teammates, fans, and the city of Edmonton for making these past couple years very special. Made lot of good memories and loved every minute of it. Excited to get things started with the @stlouisblues."
Dylan Holloway has played for the Oilers since his NHL debut in 2022-23. Drafted 14th overall in 2020, he has registered nine goals and nine assists in 89 regular-season games.
Holloway has also played 26 playoff games, including 25 in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. In the postseason, he scored five goals and two assists.
Dylan Holloway discussed offer sheet situation on 'Hockey Sense' podcast
On September 1, 2024, Dylan Holloway discussed his time with the Edmonton Oilers on Andy Strickland’s Hockey Sense podcast. He shared that the Oilers knew about the St. Louis Blues’ plans to offer him and Philip Broberg contracts before the official offers came in.
Holloway found this situation odd and said:
"...It was weird the way they handled it. I felt I had no other option but to sign the offer sheet.”
He said it was a tough week, with Oilers fans initially upset about his move. However, his teammates understood his decision.
Holloway noted that hockey is a business, and sometimes tough choices have to be made. The 22-year-old was sad to leave Edmonton, a team he liked and which was close to his home in Calgary, but he is excited about joining the Blues.
“...Hockey ultimately is a business and you got to take look after yourself. That’s kind of the advice I was given from a lot of guys too. You got to take care of yourself first,” Holloway said.
Looking back, Holloway’s use of the offer sheet as leverage was a common strategy. He will now look forward to a fruitful time with the Blues.
