Luke Gazdic, Jennifer Botterill opine Patrick Kane shouldn't make USA's 4 Nations Face-Off roster

On October 31, Luke Gazdic and Jennifer Botterill talked about Patrick Kane's chances of making Team USA for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Both analysts think Kane may not fit into a lineup with many strong players.

Botterill noted that with stars like Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid and the Tkachuk brothers, Kane might have a hard time finding a spot. She respects Kane's career, including his three Stanley Cups, but believes the current talent pool could be a barrier.

"Respect to Kane, but I just don't think there is room for him on that roster. You start thinking about Matthews and Connor, the Tkachuk brothers, and JT Miller. I mean, his career is unbelievable, and what he's accomplished is amazing. But with the depth on the U.S. roster up front, I just don’t think there’s room for him," Botterill said (via Sportsnet).

Gazdic agreed, saying the NHL season is still young and players are still adjusting.

"I'll break this tie. I’ll split the tie. Usually, I'm a glass-half-full guy, but I’m with Jen. I’m going no. Respectfully, of course," Gazdic said.

General Manager Bill Guerin will have tough choices to make for the tournament. At 35 years old, Patrick Kane will compete against younger players who may have the advantage. Kane has a strong record, with nearly 1,300 career points and two Olympic experiences. His former teammate, Alex DeBrincat, defended Kane’s chance of being included, saying his skills are still impressive.

“You put him with the top-end players,” DeBrincat said (via Athletic.com).“and he’s going to just be that much better.”

The 4 Nations Face-Off is an important event for the U.S. team. It provides a rare chance to compete at a high level. Kane’s experience is unmatched, and many younger players look up to him. His leadership could be valuable in tough situations, especially as Team USA aims to win a championship after a long wait.

Patrick Kane's performance in the NHL 2024-25 season

Patrick Kane has started this season strong, with seven points (two goals, five assists) in 10 games. He’s played an average of 17 minutes per game and has been effective in key situations, with a power-play goal and a game winner.

Recently, Kane scored a goal and an assist against the New Jersey Devils and earned two assists against the Edmonton Oilers. He is expected to score close to 60 points this season.

Patrick Kane faced a tough game in the Red Wings' 6-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. He did not score a single point and has given an average performance, same as the Red Wings. The Red Wings are placed 5th in the Atlantic Division.
