Maple Leafs GM Brad Treveling speaks out on Auston Matthews' status for Senators game
Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving gave an update on Auston Matthews' injury status before Tuesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators. Matthews, who has an upper-body injury, has missed the last three games. Treliving said he is "doubtful" for Tuesday, even though he returned to light skating on Saturday and Sunday.
Treliving added that he remains day-to-day, according to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun.
"We want to make sure we get ahead of it and hopefully get it behind us once and for all," Treliving said. "He will remain day to day. I would say he is doubtful for tomorrow, but he skated Saturday and Sunday so we’ll keep going down that path."
Matthews is on injured reserve but could be cleared to play on Tuesday. However, he will likely stay out to ensure a full recovery. In 13 games this season, he has recorded five goals and 11 points.
The Leafs are also dealing with other injuries. Max Pacioretty is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury and Calle Jarnkrok is recovering from a setback due to a sports hernia. Defenseman Jani Hakanpaa has returned from a conditioning loan but hasn’t yet been cleared.
Treliving said the team will keep a close watch on Matthews’ progress and manage all players carefully through the long season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a 3-0-0 record without Matthews in the lineup. NHL insider Jonas Siegel noted that the Leafs have outscored opponents 11-2 during these games. They started with a 4-0 win over the Boston Bruins, ending their nine-game win streak against them. They then beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 and the Montreal Canadiens 4-1.
The Maple Leafs are 9-5-2 with 20 points and are second in the Atlantic Division standings. Only Florida is ahead of them with 23 points.
Despite Auston Matthews' absence, Leafs won against the Canadiens 4-1 on Saturday.
