Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube makes his feelings known about Morgan Rielly’s fight with Tage Thompson

During the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly picked a fight with Sabres Tage Thompson. This came after Thomspon delivered a hard check on Leafs captain Auston Matthews.

Rielly confronted Thompson immediately after the hit, dropping his gloves to defend his teammate. The two exchanged several punches before Rielly fell to the ice and referees had to step in to separate them.

During the post-game interview, Leaf head coach Craig Berube praised Morgan Rielly for stepping up to defend Auston Matthews:

"I love it. I thought that was great. I have no problem with that. We’ll kill that penalty off. Mo’s a team guy, a team-first guy, and I thought it was great."

Berube also talked about the success of the forward line that stood out offensively. He said their speed, hustle, and ability to quickly transition into scoring opportunities were key factors. The HC then praised the defensive pairs, saying they played really well. Berube mentioned how they handled a tough opponent, blocked shots, and used their sticks effectively.

Morgan Rielly had a crisp reply in response to his fight with Tage Thompson

Morgan Rielly was asked what prompted the fight on the ice in the post-game presser as well. In response, he said there wasn’t any specific reason and it was just part of hockey.

“Nothing in particular, just...um, just... hockey”, Rielly said.

He also heaped praise on teammate Matt Murray who made an emotional return to the NHL after being out for 629 days due to double hip surgery and a tough rehab.

“We're very happy for him. Whenever you have a teammate, who goes through, you know, a long rehab process after a serious injury and, you know, he didn't complain once, he didn't feel sorry for himself, he just got back to work.
“It's great to have that payoff here tonight. And you know, he's going to continue to grind, and he's going to continue to put in the work. We're just extremely happy for a guy like that,” he added.

On the night, Murray helped the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-3. Captain Auston Matthews also praised the 30-year-old’s mental fortitude post-game, showing Toronto's solidarity.
