Maple Leafs HC makes feelings known about Dennis Hildeby conceding 4 goals from 18 shots in 5-1 loss to Blue Jackets

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Dennis Hildeby allowed four goals on 18 shots. It was Hildeby’s first start since January 11, and he struggled to find consistency.

Hildeby talked about his recent surge in time with the Leafs.

"Well, he wants to be better. He has to have the first one, but whatever. He hasn’t played in a long time, either. He is trying to battle." Berube said, per mapleleafshotstove.com, "I am not going to sit here and blame the goalie. It is a team game. We have to be better. We had to score some goals. We didn’t.

Hildeby now has a 3-3-0 record this season with a 3.18 goals-against average and a .878 save percentage in six games. He is currently playing for the Maple Leafs due to Anthony Stolarz’s knee injury.

Hildeby talked about his recent surge in time with the Leafs.

“Every goalie in this league has done the same journey. It is challenging, for sure, but you just kind of find a way to deal with it." Hildeby said, per Sportsnet, "But I absolutely love my time up here. I’m having a lot of fun, even though the results haven’t been there so far. So, I just try and take every day as it comes and enjoy it,”

Adam Fantilli sealed the 5-1 win and his hat trick with an empty-net goal. Toronto will need to bounce back against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

Auston Matthews talked about Maple Leafs' 5-1 loss

Auston Matthews spoke about the Maple Leafs’ 5-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Matthews scored the only goal for Toronto. He said the team struggled on the power play, staying on the outside too much.

Matthews explained,

“There was maybe a little bit too much movement I thought,” Matthews said, per NHL.com, “Their penalty kill in particular plays a little bit tighter, and we were a lot on the outside, not enough on the inside.
"Their goalie made some good saves, they blocked some shots. I thought we could have done a better job of one, two passes and try to deliver it. It was too much on the outside, too much passing with really making nothing happen.”

His goal, the 20th of the season, came in the third period. He one-timed a pass from William Nylander to beat Elvis Merzlikins. This goal ties Matthews with Darryl Sittler for the fourth-most 20-goal seasons in Maple Leafs history.
