Marty Biron makes his opinion on Edmonton Oilers possibly demoting Connor McDavid's $38.5M linemate crystal clear
On October 22, 2024, NHL analyst Marty Biron discussed Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman's struggles this season. Hyman, who is on a seven-year $38.5M contract (per Spotrac) has not scored in the first six games this season.
On TSN's That's Hockey, Biron talked about whether the Oilers should move Hyman off Connor McDavid's line. He believes it is too early to make that decision.
Despite Hyman's slow start, Biron believes his chemistry with McDavid can lead to success. He argues that the Edmonton Oilers should keep the line together and adjust their approach.
"I’m not saying it’s all on Hyman, or all on his linemates, but they’ve got to start looking for him and putting him in the best possible position to succeed, which isn’t happening right now. McDavid and his line have to pick him up, so they need to stick together," Biron said.
Biron stressed the need for patience and suggested that Edmonton Oilers should wait until the end of October before making changes. He noted that last season, Hyman averaged 2.5 shots per game from high-danger areas.
This season, he is averaging only 1.5 shots per game. Biron believes the Oilers must create more scoring chances for Hyman. Last season, he thrived on backdoor feeds and deflections, which are not happening this year.
Hyman's career has improved since joining the Edmonton Oilers. He scored a career-high 21 goals with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has adjusted well to playing with McDavid, so it is reasonable to expect him to regain his form.
Biron opines Edmonton Oilers forward's Team Canada roster spot is in jeopardy
Analyst Marty Biron has expressed doubts about Zach Hyman's selection for Team Canada. He believes Hyman might be falling off the roster.
Biron pointed out that other players are emerging in the NHL. He mentioned Alexis Lafrenière, Dylan Guenther, Tom Wilson, and Drake Batherson as potential replacements if they keep playing well.
Biron highlighted that Hyman needs to improve his scoring to secure a spot.
“If Hyman doesn’t score at a higher pace or level by the time they’re selecting Team Canada, he’s not going to be one of the forwards taken. There are too many others performing at a high level to overlook them,” he said.
Hyman's ability to score will be important for his chances of making the team as the tournament approaches.
Next February, the NHL will host the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. Teams from Finland, Sweden, Canada, and the United States will compete in this tournament.
