"Might be a bit more serious": NHL analyst sounds the alarm after Connor McDavid's injury forces exit
NHL analyst Craig Button is worried after Connor McDavid left the Edmonton Oilers' game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a lower-body injury. McDavid's game ended just 37 seconds in. He collided with Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski while entering the offensive zone. His early exit was significant, as the Oilers lost 6-1 in a tough game.
After the game, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch announced that McDavid would return to Edmonton for more injury assessments.
Button stressed the need for caution, suggesting that McDavid's injury might be worse than initially reported.
(0:50) “If you're not feeling that, if that part of your leg or whatever got injured is not up to par, I think that caution is the better avenue to go on right here. So, Connor McDavid might be a little bit more serious than maybe initial reports indicated,” Button said.
As McDavid returns for evaluation, the Oilers are in an important part of their schedule. They have two more road games coming up. They will play the Nashville Predators on Thursday and the Calgary Flames on Sunday. After that, they will host the New Jersey Devils on Nov. 4. McDavid is tied with teammate Leon Draisaitl for the team lead in points this season, and his absence could significantly impact the Oilers’ performance.
McDavid is crucial to Edmonton's offense and has 10 points this season, with three goals and seven assists. Last year, he scored 132 points in 76 games. His injury puts more pressure on a team with a 4-5-1 record.
Kris Knoblauch is looking into AHL to fill Connor McDavid's void
Connor McDavid is both the captain and the best player on the team. He scores goals and sets up plays, finishing last season with 100 assists. The Oilers are unsure how long McDavid will be out and are considering temporary replacements.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch said the team might look to the AHL for help. One possible call-up is Drake Caggiula. He didn’t make the main roster out of training camp but has performed well in the AHL, with five points in five games. Caggiula has experience and can play center or wing, giving the Oilers some flexibility.
Lane Pederson is another option for the Oilers. He has NHL experience with other teams and brings a steady, reliable style. The Oilers might also consider calling up Matthew Savoie. He’s a young, promising player acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres.
The Oilers have a couple of days before playing the Nashville Predators, giving them time to make a decision. Filling McDavid’s spot is a big task, but these call-up options provide some hope.
