"Mika & Lindgren gotta sit. This defense is so lifeless & uneventful": Blueshirts fans fed up after NY Rangers' 3-1 loss to Carolina Hurricanes
NY Rangers fans, who breathed a sigh of relief after the team's victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday, were once again left devastated when the Rangers fell 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
The Rangers had started the season with a promising 5-0-1 record, giving their fans hope that this might finally be the year their three-decade-long Stanley Cup drought would end. However, the team's relentless decline, marked by a dismal 4-12-0 record in their last 16 matches, has frustrated and disillusioned fans.
Many took to X after the latest humiliating blow at home, adding to the discontent surrounding last year's Presidents' Trophy winners and Eastern Conference finalists.
"After 1 win, the team is back to this huh? Tis the season!" reacted a fan.
"This team is a disgrace,"rwrote another fan.
"All I want for Christmas is a 2 game Rangers winning streak," said another fan.
The NY Rangers' sunday loss was particularly hurtful for fans, as the team begun the game with a 1-0 lead thanks to left-winger Jimmy Vesey's goal just 17 seconds into the game. However, the Rangers ultimately fell 3-1, with many fans pointing to the team's weak defense as the root cause.
Fans specifically criticized 26-year-old defenseman Ryan Lindgren for his highly inconsistent performance in the 27 games he has played so far. Additionally, center Mika Zibanejad, who recently celebrated his 600th game for the Rangers, has now extended his point drought to five consecutive games.
"Mika & Lindgren gotta sit. This defense is so lifeless & uneventful," a fan noted.
"Can Mika please waive his NMC," said another fan.
"After that hot start to the 1st period, this turned into an absolute disaster. Same old Rangers. Fire everybody. Get rid of the dead weight on the roster," a fan said.
Mika Zibanejad speaks out on NY Rangers' tough loss to Hurricanes
Amid the NY Rangers' dismal 12-loss streak in their last 16 games, many fans are criticizing the team's mediocre performance, attributing it to number-one center Mika Zibanejad's highly underwhelming power play production.
Mika shared his thoughts on Sunday's game, acknowledging how the Rangers, who had taken a 1-0 lead early in the game courtesy of Jimmy Vesey's goal, couldn't contain the Hurricanes in the second period and ultimately got outshot 16-8 by them
Mika said in the post-match media interaction:
"Our start was good. First period was pretty good. Second period, we gave them too much time, too much space, and spent way too much time in our defensive zone."
The NY Rangers, with a 16-16-1 record, currently sit third from the bottom in the Metropolitan Division. They will next face the New Jersey Devils, who boast a 22-11-3 record and are sitting near the top of the division. The Rangers have a struggling 3-5-0 record within their division and have already lost their previous match against the Devils 5-1 earlier this season.
