Mitch Marner shares his candid reaction to seeing his teammates receive Stanley Cup rings from Panthers
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner shared his candid thoughts on seeing three of his teammates receive their Stanley Cup rings from their championship season with the Florida Panthers last season.
Marner acknowledged that it was a special moment for Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Anthony Stolarz and Steven Lorentz to be honored by their former team.
"Yeah, I got to look. Great job by them. It's special. I mean, like I spoke to you guys about the other day, it's a special thing for them. We knew it was going to be a special night for those three," Mitch Marner said as per Hockey News.
Mitch Marner went on to compliment the Panthers organization for putting together video tributes for each player during the game.
"Not the result we wanted for them. But it's pretty classy what they did," Marner said, even though the Leafs lost 5-1.
The rings are intricate pieces of jewelry, with 554 diamonds, 16 princess-cut rubies, one large round ruby, nine round sapphires, and 37 yellow sapphires. Lorentz marveled at the massive ring, unsure where he would wear it.
"It is obviously massive and I really don’t know where I am going to be wearing it. It takes up a lot of space," Lorentz said. "They did a great job. Opening the boxes, with all the guys in the room there so we got to see everyone. It brought up a lot of good memories."
The one large ruby sits next to each player's name and number, while the state of Florida is outlined in diamonds. The ruby pinpoints Broward County, where the Panthers are located.
Mitch Marner's comments following the Maple Leafs' loss to Panthers
The injuries continue to plague the Maple Leafs, as they fell 5-1 to the Panthers on Wednesday night. Forward Bobby McMann became the latest casualty, exiting with a lower-body injury to join a crowded injured reserve list.
With so many regulars sidelined, including captain Auston Matthews, Max Domi, Matthew Knies, Max Pacioretty, Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf, Mitch Marner acknowledged the difficulty of filling those roles.
"We're missing half our team up front, man, it's tough," said Marner. "We got a lot of guys coming in, trying to jump up in some roles. They've done a great job. I think we've done a great job keeping pucks overnight, five on five, but tonight, like I said, we got to be up the ice more."
Mitch Marner also emphasized the need to improve the forecheck and net-front presence to get back in the win column.
