New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello has his say on $49M worth star's future with team

In a recent interview with The Athletic, New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello discussed Anders Lee's future. Lee had a challenging season, but Lamoriello praised his professionalism and leadership. Lee had signed a seven-year contract extension worth $49M after the 2018-19 season.

Lamoriello said of Lee,

"You’re talking about a consummate pro: high integrity, high character, team first. I’d say he was one of our better players in the playoffs. That should answer any questions you might have — how he responded to whatever role he was asked to play."

Lee had 20 goals and 17 assists during the 2023-24 season. Despite a tough season, his playoff performance showed his value as he had four points (one goal, three assists) in six games.

The New York Islanders finished third in the Metropolitan Division with a 39-27-16 record but lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round.

Anders Lee comments on his fresh start with the New York Islanders

Anders Lee is eager for a fresh start with the New York Islanders after a difficult season. Speaking at Da Beauty League, he expressed optimism about the upcoming season and new team members.

“Last year we had a lot of ups and downs and a tumultuous season,” Lee said per NHL.com, “I think that’s the exciting part, that we get to go after this thing again and start with some new faces. It’s a great opportunity."

Lee praised coach Patrick Roy's energy and focus, which helped turn the team around last season. It helped them qualify for playoffs. He is looking forward to starting the season with Roy.

“When Patty came in, he came in with an intensity and focus and an energy that was just really infectious throughout our group,” Lee said. "I think there’s a lot to look forward to in that regard,”

Lee is also excited about Anthony Duclair joining the team. Duclair, who had 42 points last season, is expected to boost the Islanders' scoring.

"Having Anthony come in, it’s huge for us,” Lee said. “He brings a big element to our team with the speed and playmaking, and he’s been around a long time... So, he’s going to be very welcomed in our room."

Lee stressed the need for consistency and avoiding late-season struggles. He believes the New York Islanders should be ready from Day One and maintain their performance through all 82 games and into the playoffs.
