NHL analyst gives take on $68M Leon Draisaitl's trade lest Oilers don't offer 'deserving' extension
On the "NHL Network," host Jamie Hersch and analyst Stu Grimson discussed the potential trade scenario surrounding Leon Draisaitl from the Edmonton Oilers.
Hersch raised the question of whether the team could afford to pay Draisaitl what he deserved and speculated on the possibility of his exit. Draisaitl is entering the final year of his $68 million deal and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.
However, Grimson expressed his belief that Leon Draisaitl could stay with the Oilers. He stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity to win the Cup while Connor McDavid is at his peak, highlighting Deraisaitl's crucial role in completing McDavid's performance and providing offense support.
Grimson, though, acknowledged the financial challenges of retaining both star players but remained optimistic about the German forward's future with the club.
"I don't believe so. And from management's perspective, I think the following is valid. You've got a window within which to win while Connor McDavid, and it's a pretty wide window wide opening, but while Connor McDavid, you know is in peak form, and to me, you know whether they're playing together on the same line, whether they're one two down the middle, just depending on the moment in time for this group," he said.
Grimson added:
"Leon brings a whole lot more to the mix adds a robust complement to Connor McDavid, a guy that can carry the offensive load when in the rare moment when Connor's production dips, it would take some cap creativity, something really creative, you know, Cap massaging in order to keep those two buttoned down on the same roster, but I don't see Draisaitl leaving in the near term."
According to reports, Leon Draisaitl is content with remaining on the Oilers. But it remains unclear when the team and his representative will finalize the terms of his new deal or the specific figures involved in the contract.

Insider Bob Stauffer speculates Leon Draisaitl to sign eight-year extension
Team insider Bob Stauffer had a conversation with one of Draisaitl's agents. It's reported that an eight-year contract extension is the most favorable outcome for the German forward in his new deal with the Oilers.
As quoted by David Staples in his Edmonton Journal piece, Stauffer said:
"It’s going to be a seven or eight-year deal,” Stauffer said on 'Oilers Now'. “It’s probably going to be an eight-year deal realistically.
"The reality is that for the Edmonton Oilers organization, for the success of the Edmonton Oilers, the two biggest things they need to do in the next two years is get extensions done with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid."
