2024 Stanley Cup Final - Game Six

NHL analyst Greg Cote doubles down on Connor McDavid hot take after Stanley Cup loss

Connor McDavid was unsuccessful in his bid for a Stanley Cup Final win. The hockey superstar put together a fabulous postseason and was instrumental in getting to Game 7 after the Edmonton Oilers fell behind three games. However, the pursuit of the trophy fell short.

Greg Cote, an NHL analyst who has spoken about McDavid's lack of trophies before, doubled down on his hot take about the Oilers star. Cote said on "The Dan Le Batard Show":

"The best news is McDavid didn't get the trophy he wanted. The Panthers stole that one from him. They didn't steal it. They earned it from him. So it's a happy day down here, happier than down there in Edmonton.
"McDavid continues to pile up fantastic numbers with nothing to show at the end of it. This postseason of his was really a metaphor for his career. That is what makes him overrated."

McDavid came up short partly because he was held in check through Games 6 and 7. He had accumulated 42 points through the entirety of the postseason but was silent in both those games. It didn't hurt them in Game 6, but it did in Game 7 when they lost 2-1.

Cote believes McDavid to be overrated since he can accumulate all sorts of accolades, including the 2023-2024 Conn Smythe MVP award, but can't get his team to lift the Stanley Cup.

Connor McDavid quiet on Conn Smythe Award win

It has only happened a handful of times across all sports, but the Finals MVP was from a losing time again on Monday, June 25. When the Florida Panthers emerged victorious, it was Connor McDavid who was heralded for his performance.

Despite the loss, McDavid was the best player on the ice for seven games, but it was no consolation prize. When he was told of his award, a shell-shocked McDavid said he "guessed" it was an honor to win the award and have his name alongside other greats. He had nothing else to say. It's a huge award, but it pales in comparison to the Stanley Cup trophy.
