NHL insider marks out underrated Habs player as one to watch in 2024: "He doesn't get the respect he deserves"

In a recent episode of "The Sick Podcast," Stu Cowan and Matt Ohayon discussed Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki. They agreed Suzuki doesn't get enough respect around the NHL.

Ohayon mentioned that while the Habs captain isn't at the level of stars like Leon Draisaitl or Connor McDavid, he deserves recognition as a solid top-line center.

"I think overall as a player, he doesn't get the respect he deserves around the league," Ohayon said (Timestamp: 13:32). "You know, no one is going to make the case that he is up there with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby."

Ohayon believes Suzuki should be in the conversation for being a "1B" center or at least a middle-of-the-pack top-line player.

"No one will make that case because that's just not reality. But I think he does have his place in being in 1B conversations of being even just middle-of-the-pack top-line centers. I think he should be in that conversation." Ohayon added.

Suzuki's stats from the 2023-24 season were strong, with 33 goals, 44 assists and 77 points. Despite this, he often goes unnoticed. As the 2024 season approaches, Suzuki is a player to watch. And with the addition of Ivan Demidov as the No. 5 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, Habs have many expectations from the fans.

Stu Cowan talks about Habs captain Nick Suzuki's presence in Olympics roster

Stu Cowan added that Nick Suzuki's versatility makes him valuable. He might not make Team Canada for the Olympics, but his name could be considered. He suggested this in light of Team Canada's preparations for ice hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"If he's in the conversation for Team Canada with the Olympics, some people mention his name." Cowan said, "And the thing is... with these Team Canada is the Olympics... they have a lot of centers. Like some guys end up playing on the wing, and Nick Suzuki is a smart enough guy that he could play on the wing if he has to."
"I'm not saying he will be on the Olympic team, but I think... he wants to be on the Olympic team... I think he'll be considered."

Suzuki's smart play and ability to play a 200-foot game make him a strong candidate for different roles, including playing on the wing.

"Plus, the fact that he's a 200-foot player, I'm sure he can play the wing if you need to put him on the wing. He's smart enough to do that." Cowan added.

Ohayon noted that the Habs captain handles pressure well and doesn't fold in tough situations. This could help him elevate his game in 2024.
