NHL Rumors: Elliotte Friedman claims Rangers have "made their choice" over Igor Shesterkin

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman talked about the New York Rangers and their goaltender, Igor Shesterkin. On SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Friedman said that the Rangers will likely sign Shesterkin to a long-term deal.

“I believe it’s going to work out." Friedman said. "I think the Rangers have made the choice that they’re going to pay him and to me, it just comes down to what the numbers going to be."

Friedman expressed confidence that an agreement would happen soon.

"But until I’m told otherwise, Scotty, I expect them to work out. Work it out. I believe the Rangers have made their choice here," Friedman added.

While the exact contract details are unclear, it is expected to be more than $10.5 million per season.

On Friday's preseason game against the New York Islanders, Shesterkin allowed five goals on 38 shots in a 5-2 loss. He faced three even-strength goals and two power-play goals. Although the defense did not help him much, Shesterkin struggled during the game.

Despite this, preseason games are not the main focus. The goal is to ensure Shesterkin is ready for the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Rangers will open the regular season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Igor Shesterkin's contract situation with the New York Rangers

Igor Shesterkin is entering the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $5.67 million, leaving the New York Rangers with a crucial decision on whether to retain him. His next deal is expected to come with a substantial pay raise. According to NHL insider Mollie Walker, Shesterkin is reportedly asking around $12 million annually, a figure that would make him the highest-paid goaltender in the league.

The Rangers have little leverage because Shesterkin is the best goaltender in the league. He could easily find other teams willing to pay him. Keeping Shesterkin is crucial for the Rangers, as his performance greatly affects their success. Last season, the Rangers won the Presidents' Trophy but ranked 11th in expected goals. They still won due to Shesterkin’s excellent skills.

Shesterkin ranks high in goals saved (2.58 GAA), with a save percentage of .913. He performs even better in the playoffs. The Rangers often rely on him to keep them competitive when under pressure. So, the Rangers are expected to pay Shesterkin a salary that reflects his value.
