NHL Rumors: Insider Frank Seravalli hints at next potential GM for Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes look to fill their general manager vacancy internally, as per insider Frank Seravalli. According to Seravalli, candidates for the Hurricanes' GM role have been notified of the team’s plans. The news echoes the possibility that interim GM Eric Tulsky will be named to the position.

Former general manager Don Waddell left following the Hurricanes playoff exit in the second round. Waddell signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets as the GM and president of hockey operations. The move left a void in the Hurricanes organization, which Tulsky has filled till now.

The Hurricanes had reportedly interviewed several other candidates, including Blue Jackets’ former GM Jarmo Kekalainen. According to reports by insider Elliotte Friedman, Kekalainen was a contender for the role in Carolina.

However, Friedman pointed out that the next general manager would not have full decision-making control.

"The Hurricanes are making sure that everyone's eyes are wide open about how this is all going to work," Friedman said (via 32 Thoughts podcast). "And that is that whoever gets this job is going to be the manager, but they're not going to have the power. This job is going to be as a facilitator. ... The new GM hire is not going to have the final say."

Given that Tulsky was already part of the Hurricanes staff, he may get a lot more leeway than a brand-new candidate like Kekalainen. In the meantime, it looks like it will only be a matter of time before Tulsky’s official hiring is announced.

Why Eric Tulsky is the right choice for Carolina Hurricanes GM role

A recent piece in The Hockey News looked into why Eric Tulsky is the right person for the Canes’ GM role. As the piece noted, it makes sense for Carolina to fill the position from within rather than hiring an external candidate.

Specifically, the article underscored that Tulsky already knows how the Canes’ front office works. He’s familiar with the collaborative process at the executive level in Carolina. This knowledge gives him an edge over any other candidate who would need to learn the team culture.

Also, the Hurricanes had made it known that their new GM would not be solely in charge of decision-making. As such, the decision-making process would hinge on several executives. This dynamic is something that Tulsky is familiar with, making this transition a seamless one.

Lastly, Tulsky has a unique understanding of the Hurricanes’ organization. He’s been involved in all areas, from contract negotiations to scouting. This involvement gives Tulsky the insider track on any other candidates, like Kekalainen, regardless of these candidates’ experience level.

Ultimately, it seems the Carolina Hurricanes made the logical choice by promoting Eric Tulsky to the full-time GM position. Carolina will likely make it official soon as the club gets set for the draft and free agency.
