NHL Rumors: Insider reports Penguins holding off $20 million D-man's extension talks as they assess team direction this season

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson has entered the final year of his four-year $20,125,875 contract signed in January 2020. Many assumed that after extending Sidney Crosby, the team would next focus on Pettersson. However, the team hasn't made any move towards extending the defenseman, per NHL Insider David Pagnotta.

While speaking on “The Latest,” Ryan Paton brought up the topic and asked Pagnotta if the Penguins had anything brewing to pursue an extension for Pettersson.

David Pagnotta responded:

“Short answer is no.”

He explained that while there was initial belief the Penguins would prioritize Pettersson next, they haven’t started serious discussions. Instead, the Penguins' management is evaluating the team’s progress and direction before making any long-term decisions.

“He’s going to be a UFA in the summer if he doesn’t lock into a deal. He’s a valuable piece on that back end. But again, Kyle Dubas and staff want to figure out exactly where this Penguins team is at,” Pagnotta said.
“So we’re probably not going to see discussions happen if they do until closer to the new year, if not into the new year,” he added.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain heaps praise on Marcus Pettersson

While his future remains uncertain in Pittsburgh, Marcus Pettersson is still a beloved figure in the locker room. Captain Sidney Crosby had some candid words to share on his D-man and his work ethic.

“So positive every single day,” Crosby said. “He works really hard. He cares a lot about all the guys, and he cares a lot about his game and being a good teammate. He’s somebody that I’m sure every (defensive partner) loves to play with. He’s really reliable. He’s been great for us.” [H/T Trib Live]

Petterson wants to continue his NHL career in Pittsburgh. He mentioned that he values his tenure with the Penguins and that his first child was born in Pittsburgh, making the city special to him.

When asked about his contract extension talks, Marcus Petterson declined to answer.

“No comment,” Pettersson said. “I feel like I’ve had a good (training) camp, and I tried to stay focused on the on-ice (activity) and let everything fall into place. Whatever happens, happens. I’ve expressed that I love it here.”

Although he is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, the player claimed that he prefers to focus on his performance rather than contract discussions.
