NHL Rumors: Top insider reports Edmonton Oilers exploring major trade before training camp
The Edmonton Oilers are leaving no stones unturned as they aim to lift the Stanley Cup next season. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, they are considering a major trade before the 2024–25 NHL season. New general manager Stan Bowman is looking to make big changes to improve the team's depth.
"The Oilers are in a different position because of what they’ve built and because they advanced to the Stanley Cup Final. Players want to play there," Seravalli said on Oilers Now. "So the Oilers have options and they’re pursuing those options.
"I’ve got to tell you, there are other things that Edmonton is looking at, including a potential trade that could shake things up a little bit more than the PTO route. [A trade that] wouldn’t have to wait until training camp."
After some departures, the Oilers need to improve their roster's depth. They are looking for new good fits to enhance their potential.
Edmonton Oilers are trying to make calculated moves for Stanley Cup dreams
The Edmonton Oilers have been active this offseason. They lost former GM Ken Holland, third-line center Ryan McLeod and defenseman Cody Ceci. Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway also left due to offer sheets from the St. Louis Blues. This leaves a need for new players. Bowman is exploring various options.
The Oilers were visibly weak on defense compared to the Florida Panthers lineup in the Stanley Cup Finals. It was one of the main reasons the Panthers had a 3-0 advantage. Next season, the Oilers would not want to repeat those mistakes.
Edmonton is trying to strengthen its roster to stay competitive and support its Stanley Cup hopes. After extending Leon Draisaitl for a humongous $112 million contract, they aim to make another valuable addition before the season starts.
As the season approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Edmonton Oilers' roster changes and what moves they make.
