Nova Scotia-born Stanley Cup champ takes a playful jab at Sidney Crosby after his 1600-point milestone

Al MacInnis recently celebrated Sidney Crosby's achievement of reaching 1,600 points in his NHL career. Crosby and MacInnis both hail from Nova Scotia, with the former born in Halifax and raised in Cole Harbour, while the latter was born in Inverness.

In 2018, MacInnis was ranked as one of Nova Scotia’s greatest athletes, placing third behind Crosby and curler Colleen Jones. In a playful post on X (formerly Twitter), MacInnis, who scored 1,274 points as a defenseman, congratulated Crosby:

"Congrats to the 2nd best player to come out of Nova Scotia on 1,600 pts."

Crosby's milestone puts him in an elite group of NHL players. He is the 10th player in league history to reach this mark and the only active player to do so, currently at 1,602 points.

He earned a secondary assist on Bryan Rust’s goal and helped Evgeni Malkin score his 500th career goal. Crosby ended the night with an overtime winner, showing his skill at age 37.

This milestone adds to Sidney Crosby's impressive record. He is now in the top 10 on the NHL's all-time points list and is one of only 14 players with over 1,000 assists. He also shares the record for the most point-per-game seasons in NHL history with Wayne Gretzky, having 19 seasons.

Sidney Crosby opens up about reaching 1,600 NHL points

Speaking to reporters ahead of his milestone-setting performance, Sidney Crosby said reaching 1,600 NHL points would be an honor.

"I think it's just an honor to be part of that group," Crosby said (via NHL.com). "To be honest, I don't think about it a whole lot. Hopefully there's a lot of time to reflect after the fact. But it's just a huge honor to be in that group of guys."

Drafted first overall in 2005, Crosby is currently trailing Mario Lemieux’s 1,723 points, which include 690 goals and 1,033 assists. He also expressed appreciation for the Penguins organization:

“You look at the guys and the people that have been in this organization over the time that we’ve been here, so that helps a lot too,” Crosby added. “You can go right through all the players, management, everyone that’s been part of this organization. Ownership. We’ve been pretty fortunate to be here.”

Sidney Crosby signed a $17.4 million contract extension in 2024, securing his stay in Pittsburgh until 2027.
