OHL finalizes decision for Flames prospect Zayne Parekh after alleged fan-whacking incident: Report

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) has finished reviewing Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh’s alleged incident with a fan. Hockey insider Tony Ferrari reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the OHL found “no conclusive evidence” that Parekh attempted to hit a fan with his stick.

Ferrari of The Hockey News said:

"When it comes to Zayne Parekh and the reported incident of an interaction with a fan postgame, the #OHL has found no conclusive evidence and there is no punishment expected for Parekh from the league. The #Flames prospect looks to be in the clear."

This alleged hitting incident after an OHL game where Parekh’s Saginaw Spirit played the Soo Greyhounds. Parekh was ejected for a hard check on an opponent. As he was leaving, some reported that he tried to jab a fan with his stick, sparking concerns about a possible suspension.

In the past, similar proven cases have led to long suspensions, such as when the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League banned Zachary L'Heureux for 10 games following an incident with a fan.

Parekh evades a similar punishment following the OHL's investigation.

Flames coach Ryan Huska discusses prospect Zayne Parekh

Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh wrapped up his first NHL training camp in September. He expressed his performance could have been stronger but saw it as a learning experience. Calgary’s No. 9 pick from 2024 described the camp as "humbling," especially being on the ice with experienced NHL players who were older and more developed.

Parekh had a very busy year. He won the Memorial Cup, attended the draft combine and the draft, before joining the World Junior Summer Showcase.

His packed schedule meant he lacked a full summer to train, but Flames coach Ryan Huska appreciated Parekh’s efforts and said he saw progress each day.

“Every young guy, you want them to leave here understanding the NHL a little better and maybe recognize how hard it is to play at this level with the speed these guys play at and how much time and space is taken away from you,” Huska said (per Calgary Herald). “In Zayne’s case, I thought he did a good job of getting better every day.

With another year in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit, Parekh is working on building his strength and speed in preparation for his next NHL camp.
