Oilers GM comes clean on decision to not match Blues' offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway
Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman spoke to the media about the decision not to match the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets tendered on Aug.13 for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. The two players inked two-year deals with the Blues on Aug. 20.
Bowman explained that the decision was based on the team's need to balance short-term and long-term goals within the salary cap and was not reflective of the players. He also said:
"We really took our time analyzing and evaluating the different options. ... I had a number of phone calls over the last week with most teams in the league trying to see what they were trying to do with their roster if they were trying to move any players out or if they were trying to add in players to the mix.
"So we exhausted all opportunities and at the end of the day we ended up where we are today, which is we did not match either offer sheet." [Timestamp: 2:09]
Broberg's contract led to the Oilers receiving a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft, while Holloway's contract resulted in a third-round pick.

"At the end of the day, it's business. ... I'm very thankful for the years in Edmonton as well and for the teammates and coaches I had there. I'm looking forward to a new chapter in St. Louis now." [H/T NHL.com]
Holloway, who had nine points in 38 regular-season games and seven points in 25 playoff games, is also looking forward to the new opportunity in St. Louis.
"It's kind of a crazy opportunity," Holloway said. "It doesn't happen often, but it was an opportunity I really couldn't pass up." [H/T NHL.com]
The Oilers acquired Ty Emberson and Vasily Podkolzin on Aug. 19 in trades to maintain roster flexibility and add young talent. The team, which reached the Stanley Cup Final last season, aims to stay competitive despite these changes. The Blues, who missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, hope to improve with these new players.
