Oilers podcaster shares insights on Blues' offer sheets for Philip Broberg & Dylan Holloway
The St. Louis Blues tendered offer sheets this week for Edmonton Oilers players Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, putting the metaphorical puck back in the Oilers' court. With both players being restricted free agents, the Oilers will have an opportunity to match either or both offers. However, the team might find itself priced out and unable to do so.
The Blues offered Broberg a two-year deal worth $4.58 million, with a $2.29 million AAV. Holloway was offered a two-year deal totaling $2.29 million, with an AAV of $1.145 million.
Both figures are significantly higher than what Edmonton proposed to the players earlier this offseason. With seven days to decide and given the team's current salary cap situation, the Oilers may struggle to match either term sheet without some clever financial maneuvering, though they are likely to prioritize retaining at least one player.
During this week's episode of "Canucks Army's Canucks Conversation," David Quadrelli and Harman Dayal along with "OilersNation's" Tyler Yaremchuk, weighed in on which player is more important for the Oilers to keep.
"It’s really really tough," Yaremchuk said. "Dylan Holloway is the more proven player. He’s played more games in the NHL and has had more success at the NHL level. Philip Broberg is playing the more important position, but now he’s on the worse contract of the two. ... The better, more proven player is Holloway. Broberg plays the position of greater need." When talking about offer sheets being only used when teams are "fuming," Yaremchuk said:
"I don’t think it’s a personal feud between the two sides. It’s just St. Louis seeing a good chance to get one or maybe two good, young players and, asset-wise, pay under-market value. With the Torey Krug situation, they have the LTIR space, so why not take a swing at it?” (Time stamp: 10:10)
Tyler Yaremchuk on Philip Broberg's potential
Philip Broberg played some impressive hockey during the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, which many consider the best stretch of his NHL career. However, Yaremchuk is not convinced about the player's potential:
"Everyone likes to pencil in Broberg as a top-4 defenseman, and it’s a massive risk. He did it for 10 games in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and outside of that, we’ve never even seen him flourish as a third-pairing defenseman, let alone as a second-pair guy playing on his off-side, which is what the Oilers might need him to do." (Time stamp: 7:44)
Before the Edmonton Oilers incredible playoff run, Philip Broberg played just 12 games during the 2023-24 season, logging only two points. Before that, he played nine postseason games for the Oilers in the 2022-23 season, following a 46-game stint with the team and seven games with the Bakersfield Condors.
It is worth noting that both the Oilers and the Blues were middle-of-the-pack teams defensively last season, with the Oilers giving up 2.88 goals per game and the Blues allowing 3.02 goals per game. If Edmonton is able to match St. Louis' offer, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the days to come.
