Oilers' Stuart Skinner meets legendary Canadian golfer Mike Weir, exchanges gear at Rogers Charity Classic
Edmonton Oilers star Stuart Skinner met Canadian golf legend Mike Weir at the Rogers Charity Classic. That is a charity golf tournament played on the Champions Tour every year in Calgary, Alberta.
At the classic, Skinner swapped gears with the legendary Weir. Weir's golf bag with his name on it went to Skinner, while an autographed Oilers jersey went to Weir.
Weir played on the PGA Tour for a long time, ascending to as high as the world number three golfer in June of 2003. He had eight wins on the tour and won the Masters in 2003.
"While in Calgary for the Rogers Charity Classic, I met up with [Stuart Skinner] from the Edmonton Oilers for a gear swap. Whether it's for golf or hockey, sportsmanship and charity go hand-in-hand," Weir captioned the post on Instagram.
The Oilers also shared the photo on Instagram, where it had over 12,000 likes at the time of writing.
Stuart Skinner fought to play goalkeeper
Long before he was the key goalkeeper in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, Stuart Skinner's parents didn't want him to play the position. But Skinner always wanted to play as a goalie.
In June, during the finals, Skinner said via NHL:
“Growing up, my parents did not want me to play goalie and it took a lot of convincing. I asked them a whole bunch and I just did it. When the opportunity came when our team needed a goalie, I volunteered to be the goalie. I’m sure they were a little upset, but we’re all happy about it now.”
While his team ultimately came up short, he did play well down the stretch of the finals to help them claw their way back from a 3-0 deficit. They nearly made history but fell by a single goal in a 2-1 loss in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers.
