Paul Bissonnette believes Matt Rempe’s training with ex-NHL enforcer is a warning to league heavyweights
Paul Bissonnette recently talked about Matt Rempe’s offseason training on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. Bissonnette thinks Rempe’s work with Georges Laraque is a big warning to NHL enforcers.
Rempe, who is 6 feet 8 inches tall, has been working closely with Laraque to improve his fighting skills. Laraque, a former NHL enforcer, is helping Rempe refine his technique.
Bissonnette said that Rempe’s uppercuts in training are impressive. He believes this shows Rempe is preparing to challenge other heavyweights in the league.
"Did you see those uppercuts?" Bissonnette said. "Those were vicious uppercuts that.
"You know what, that tells me he's sending a message to the rest of the heavyweights in the league saying, 'I'm training with Georges Laraque, and I'm gonna speed bag you motherfu**ers.' There has been a revival of the heavyweight division ever since Rempe entered the league, and it ain't going away."
Biz added that while some might find the training videos amusing, Rempe’s size and power make him a serious contender.
"He is sending a straight f*****g message, man, and those uppercuts look nasty," Bissonnette said.
"So, you know, he's still young in the game, and I would imagine he's never been leaned on this much in his career where a lot of the focus of what he does is going to be running around, stirring it up, and ultimately fighting other heavyweights," Bissonnette said.
Rempe aims to enhance all areas of his game this offseason. He wants to improve his defense, skating and puck handling, alongside his fighting skills. The Rangers are pleased with Rempe’s dedication and his aggressive training.
Matt Rempe is training with Rangers teammate Chris Kreider
Matt Rempe is focused on improving before the Rangers’ training camp in September. The 22-year-old will also work with Rangers teammate Chris Kreider, who is known for his strong fitness regime.
Rempe wants to improve his skating, defense and offensive skills. His goal is to be a versatile player who can excel in the bottom six, play center or wing and contribute both offensively and defensively.
On Thursday, right before the Shoulder Check charity hockey game at Terry Connors, Matt Rempe said (via Forever Blue Shirts):
“I’m ready to stay out here and train with ‘Kreids’ for the rest of the summer. Work with him on all skills stuff and work with him in the gym and try to work on all parts of my game for the next couple of months with him.”
Last season, Matt Rempe played 28 games for the Rangers, including the playoffs. He gained a reputation for his physical style and strong forechecking. Rempe is determined to earn a regular spot in the lineup and help the team succeed.
