NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars

Paul Bissonnette calls out referee's decision over Mason Marchment's disallowed goal against Colorado Avalanche

A tense moment occurred in overtime of Game 6 between the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche when Stars forward Mason Marchment appeared to score what could have been the series-clinching goal. However, the celebration was short-lived as the goal was immediately waived off by the game's officials, citing goaltender interference on Matt Duchene.

Replays of the play seemed to indicate that Duchene's contact with Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev occurred outside the blue crease and may have been instigated by a check from Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar.

One notable figure to voice his opinion on the matter was former NHL player Paul Bissonnette. In a video shared on X, Bissonnette called into question the referees' decision, suggesting that external factors may have influenced their call.

"I think that for sure, this should have counted. Obviously with the refs waiving it off, they're probably going upstairs and they're saying, 'Well, we got to stick with the original call.' So I don't know if those refs got the DraftKings sportsbook going right now, but that was kind of a BS call.”

Dallas Stars coach and players react to Mason Marchment's disallowed goal due to goalie interference

Dallas Stars head coach, Pete DeBoer, expressed puzzlement over the decision, while Duchene remained focused on the games ahead.

DeBoer said, via dallasnews.com:

“I don’t know. I’d like to get an explanation. I didn’t get an explanation. I had heard the referees had talked to some of the players. The players had told me what the referee said. Sometimes that gets lost in translation, especially with some of our players. So I don’t want to comment on it till I get an official explanation."

Mason Marchment, while initially elated by his goal, accepted the decision with equanimity:

“I haven’t seen the replay, really, of the no goal. We’ll leave it at that. I think you just stay with it. Obviously, it can be a little tough to reset after you think it’s over and hope it’s over and then it’s kind of a gut-punch a little bit, but that’s kind of what we do. No matter what, this is going our way, and we’re a pretty even-keeled group."

Dallas forward Joe Pavelski's words encapsulated the team's mentality:

“We believed that one counted. It’s a gray area these days. It really is. We thought it looks like any kind of contact’s outside the blue paint, and then their guy pushed [him] in."

Duchene redeemed himself by scoring the game-winner in double overtime, securing Dallas' place in the conference finals.
