Paul Bissonnette opines why $31,250,000 Quinton Byfield won't experience pressure of being "top guy" for Los Angeles Kings

Star forward Quinton Byfield is amid the talking points as discussions are taking place on whether he has what it takes to be the "top guy" for the Los Angeles Kings. The 21-year-old Canadian debuted for the Kings in the 2020-21 season and has since been on the rise. Byfield had his most prolific season so far with the Kings in the 2023-24 season, scoring 20 goals and providing 35 assists.

In a conversation between the hosts of The Spittin Chiclets' Podcast and Sean Pronger, they discussed Quinton Byfield and his contract with the Kings. Paul Bissonnette said,

"This is the proper approach, where he doesn't have to suddenly be paid like he’s the top guy or be the top guy immediately."

They also praised the LA Kings for dealing with the situation and their recent trades in a professional manner.

"I want to give credit to the LA Kings for their recent decisions. They’ve made some tough moves, particularly with trades over the past year and a half. It reminds me somewhat of how they handled Adrian Kempe’s situation. Byfield’s deal is similar in that it doesn’t place an immediate burden on him to be the main guy."

The LA Kings will likely be delighted with the 5-year contract provided to Byfield worth $31.25 million as they look to build a future with the youngster.

Where does Quinton Byfield stand in the list of earners on the LA Kings roster?

Kevin Fiala currently remains the highest earner for the Kings at $7.8 million per year. The winger had an impressive season last year, contributing 73 points. He was only second to Adrian Kempe.

Anze Kopitar at $7 million per year is the second-highest earner on the roster and the third-highest contributor in terms of points last season with 70.

At $6.25 million per year, Quinton Byfield stands third in the list of earners in the team. As mentioned by Paul Bissonnette on the Spittin' Chiclets' Podcast,

"Byfield can’t be paid more than Anze Kopitar. Kopitar is set to make $7 million over the next two years."

Maybe over the next few years when Kopitar is no longer in the books of the Kings and Byfield's importance grows, we can see him climb this ladder further. As of now, Quinton Byfield will be solely focused on improving his performance on the ice and giving his all to the LA Kings.
