Paul Coffey shows confidence in Connor McDavid as he shares hopeful Stanley Cup prediction for Oilers
Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey has a prediction for Connor McDavid. The franchise superstar has an impending contract situation, as next year is his final contractual year. The two sides have reportedly not yet begun negotiating.
The two sides have yet to win a Stanley Cup together, though they came close with last year's 3-0 comeback to Game 7 against the Florida Panthers. They remain the co-favorite to win it all with the Carolina Hurricanes, per FanDuel.
Nevertheless, Coffey believes the pairing will lead to a title:
"He's going to win the Stanley Cup here with the Edmonton Oilers."
The Oilers just extended Leon Draisaitl to an NHL-record deal last offseason. They may be forced to do the same this offseason with McDavid to give themselves a chance to win that predicted title.
However, Draisaitl's extension may financially impact what the team can give McDavid. On the other hand, having two huge contracts like that on the books might impact how they can spend to field a competitive roster around McDavid and Draisaitl.
Regardless, the Oilers assistant has supreme confidence in his team thanks to McDavid's presence on it.
Oilers coach has full faith in Connor McDavid every night
When Paul Coffey sees Connor McDavid, all his fears go away. He admitted that he definitely experiences pre-game jitters and nerves, but that all fades thanks to McDavid.
He said, via NHL Trade Talk:
“I’m always nervous till I walk in the dressing room, then I see Connor McDavid and everything goes away. Cause you got your guy here that you know is going to play great every single night for you.”
Coffey went on to lavish praise on the star forward:
“Others will never understand what that kid goes through putting those skates on every single night and having to be great, and putting the pressure on himself. But I’ll tell you what. He delivers every single night, and we will get him a Stanley Cup. Connor will take a back seat to nobody when his career’s over.”
McDavid just became the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to record 1,000 points, and Coffey believes McDavid will continue having historic numbers throughout his career.
