Predators callout Toronto market's "unwarranted" and "unfair" criticism against $65,418,000 Maple Leafs star

The Nashville Predators are speaking out against the "unwarranted" and "unfair" criticism of Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner. The attention Marner gets, both good and bad, is often intensified because he plays in the high-pressure Toronto market.

During a game between the Maple Leafs and Predators, Nashville players Steven Stamkos and Luke Schenn defended Marner. Stamkos and Schenn believe the criticism isn’t justified.

"Took some heat here at times & to me it's unfair," Schenn said.

Stamkos said that while some negative attention comes with playing in such a big market, Marner’s skill and value to the Leafs are undeniable across the league. Stamkos, an experienced NHL player, also pointed out that if you asked others in the league, they would agree that Marner is one of the best players.

"Because of the market they're in, they get a lot of attention, some negative & a lot probably unwarranted ... as players, if you poll the league, they know how good he is," Stamkos said.

Marner, who's in a six-year, $65,408,000 contract, has proven his worth to the team.

During the 2024-25 regular season, he has scored nine goals, which is tied for 56th. He has recorded 27 assists, tying for fifth. With a total of 36 points, he's tied for 10th. His plus-minus rating is 8, tied for 76th. Marner consistency and playmaking are key to the Leafs’ success.

Despite the criticism, Marner’s hard work and dedication are clear, and his teammates appreciate the effort he puts in. Despite his contract nearing its end, Marner remains a vital part of the Maple Leafs.

Mitch Marner leads the Maple Leafs to win over the Predators

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Wednesday, with Auston Matthews scoring twice. Mitch Marner contributed three assists, while William Nylander added a goal. Joseph Woll made 22 saves, leading the Leafs to their third consecutive win.

Coach Craig Berube said that it was Matthews' best game, praising his improved skating.

“I thought tonight was his best game,” Berube said (via NHL.com),”

The Predators took a 1-0 lead in the first period with Jonathan Marchessault’s 500th career point. Matthews tied the game early in the third period before putting Toronto 2-1 ahead. Nylander added a goal on a power play to make it 3-1. The Predators scored late with a rebound goal from Mark Jankowski but couldn’t tie the game.

The Predators have now gone five games without a win, while for Toronto, solid defense and patience played a big role in their victory. The Leafs face the Washington Capitals next on Friday at 7 p.m. EST.
