"Probably got what we deserved": HC Derek Lalonde makes his feelings known after Detroit Red Wings' 4-1 loss to Philadelphia Flyers
The Detroit Red Wings faced similar struggles in their 4-1 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. They continued to struggle with scoring, failing to convert opportunities into goals.
Moreover, they exhibited poor puck management and spent excessive time defending in their own zone, which eventually contributed to their disappointing performance on the road against the Flyers.
After the loss, Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde noted that the team had opportunities like they had in previous games but were too hesitant to shoot, particularly in the early stages of the game.
"Yeah, it's a little frustrating. We probably had the same amount of chances than we probably had the other night, but I just think again, we get a little to not shoot first with our approach and mentality, especially early on," he said.
Lalonde acknowledged that while some underlying stats were positive for his team, the team needed to refocus on their approach. He concluded that they got what they deserved from the game and will need to improve moving forward.
"We got to get back to that. If we continue to play the right way, we'll flip some of these tonight for stretches of our game, we got away from it and we got behind. Probably got what we deserved," Lalonde added (5:03).
The Detroit Red Wings have an 11-14-4 record and are just one point above the bottom of the standings in the Atlantic Division.
They will look to address their shortcomings when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs (18-9-2) at the Little Caesars Arena next on Saturday. The puck drops at 7 p.m. ET.
Scott Laughton scores four as Flyers ease past Detroit Red Wings at home
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wells Fargo Arena.
After a goalless first period, Scott Laughton opened the scoring for the Flyers, giving them the lead at 13:22 of the second period. It was the only goal scored in that period.
Laughton added to his tally with a short-handed goal, extending the home team's lead just 1:31 into the third period. With less than four minutes remaining in the period, Ben Chiarot narrowed the gap to 2-1 for the Red Wings.
However, with less than two minutes left before the final buzzer, Laughton scored two empty-net goals, finishing the night with all four goals in the Philadelphia Flyers (14-12-4) victory.
