Rangers' Zibanejad, Trouba, Laviolette accept overrelying on goalies after 6-1 thumping against Sabres
The New York Rangers faced a disappointing 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at home on Thursday night. The defeat drops the Rangers to 8-3-1 on the season.
In net, Igor Shesterkin started but was pulled after allowing five goals on just 12 shots. Backup Jonathan Quick came in relief stopped nine shots. Rangers alternate captain Mika Zibanejad acknowledged the team's defensive struggles, especially in their own zone.
"We don't get out of our own zone, and then we spend way too much time there, especially in second periods," Zibanejad said. "We get the puck out, try to change, and then they get right back at us. And there's no excuse for what happened today."
Defenseman Jacob Trouba admitted the team wasn't ready to play and relying too heavily on their goaltending recently.
"I don't think we were ready to play.I don't think that's really any secrets. Or I'm gonna say I think everybody in here kind of understands where we were in that game.Really unravelled in the second. We said Our goal is kind of kept us in this thing the first 12 games,” Trouba said.
Trouba believes that the team need be better defensively and need to capitalize on the quality chances.
The lone goal for the Rangers came from rookie Will Cuylle, while the Sabres saw six different players light the lamp - Zach Benson, Dylan Cozens, Rasmus Dahlin, Jordan Greenway, Sam Lafferty and Tage Thompson.
Ukko Pekka Luukkonen made 25 saves out of 26 for the Sabres.
Rangers' HC Peter Laviolette on 6-1 loss to the Sabres
Following the New York Rangers' lopsided 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, coach Peter Laviolette acknowledged that the team has been over-relying on their goaltenders lately.
"I just don't think that we,I don't think we implemented our will on them like we didn't push ourselves on them. We've been under siege a little bit too much and relying on our goaltenders too much,” Rangers Peter Laviolette said.
The New York Rangers next face the Detroit Red Wings on the road on Saturday night.
